QuizTelly.com – A Website about Quiz Television – Website For Sale

What’s It All About: QuizTelly.com – www.quiztelly.com We set the site up back in the summer of 2005 of the back of our very
popular main website – www.shoppingtelly.com and since then it has grown to be extremely popular with people of all ages who addictively tune into the various quiz television programmes on television and look maybe for help with answers or just for a place to share their interest.

Sadly due to other commitments, we just don’t have the time to put a full effort into the site. There are many ways that the site and brand could be
developed, and included in the sale would be the domain www.roulettetelly.com which was going to be our next extension to the site,
promoting the latest trend in quiz television covering the raft of live roulette programmes broadcasting late night.

websites for sale

How Long Established: Summer of 2005

Traffic: The site has a solid followership.

October Stats (up to 28th October)

> Visits 19861
> Unique visitors 5262
> Pages viewed 197188
> Pages per visitor 37.5
> Pages per significant visit 12.5
> Average visit duration 10min 34s
> Average time by page seen 1min 3s
> 1 page visit rate 22%

Current Revenue: The site in the past year has profited around £3000 from advertising
which to be honest has been through little effort. Last month we also
introduced some affiliate advertising which brought in additional £102.05 in
its first month. It is felt with someone who could take on the site and give
it more attention; it could be making a great deal more.

Expenses: We utilise a dedicated server that we have run ShoppingTelly.com on, so no additional hosting or server costs are incurred. The only other real costs are the vBulletin license which is currently $85 a year. The new owners would therefore need to set up hosting – at say around $200 PA

Content The content is a mixed bag really, we do get press releases from some channels and companies who work closely with us, also from freelance presenters letting visitors know of their latest jobs, but a lot of it is our own content that we write after finding out

PLEASE NOTE: The site is reguraly mentioned on terrestrial networks such as ITV1 and Five during their popular late night quiz shows, which even at that time of night can create surges of traffic.

Currently the site is run by two people (in addition to other sites they have) plus there is one moderator who works on a volunteer basis on the forum.

Price: Owner is looking to sell for £4500 ideally. ($9000)

How to Buy Expensive Websites at Low Cost

Buying Websites No Comments »

One of the major factors in the value of a website is how well that sites performs in Google, Yahoo and to some extent MSN.

Today I am going to teach you an insiders trick that I use to find potential bargain websites.

Let’s presume that you are looking to purchase a website in the “celebrity” industry. In particular you decide that you would like to purchase a celebrity forum. One technique would be to check websites like Sitepoint.com to see if there are any celeb sites for sale, but this can often be a very long process.

The more aggressive site buyer could go to Google.com and type “Celebrity forum” and then contact the owners of the top 20 sites.

But let me save you the time and effort…… if you want to purchase a website that is ranking highly for a powerful search term, then you will have to pay a LOT of money. Often more than the site is really worth. So here is a trick that I use to find great bargain websites.

Step 1: download a SERP tracking software or use an online version.

Step 2: Monitor the top 100 results for your search term

Step 3: Ignore the top 10, but monitor closely the sites from 11 to 100

Step 4: Look for any sites that make a large, fast jump in rankings. E.g 90th to 36th within a week.

Step 5: Contact the site owner and make a bid

This works because the site owner won’t have realised that they are climbing the SERPS, and therefore won’t realise the site is growing in value.

Also, the fast jumps in rankings can often be due to Google Sandbox related filters, so it is the perfect time to buy the sites. To give you an example of this… I once had a site that got around 200 visitors per day, then, within 4 days it went to 2,000 per day and stayed that way until I sold it 4 months later for a LOT of money. This was due to the Sandbox effects. Had someone contacted me during the 200 per day stage, I would have sold for a lot less.

It is a very powerful way of getting high value sites for low, low prices, and is one of my biggest website buying secrets.

Enjoy.

The Webmaster Delusion

Featured Articles 2 Comments »

If you have ever considered buying or selling a website, then I urge you to take the time to read this article/rant.

More and more people are looking to buy existing websites as a way of saving time and money, in theory this is a perfect model, webmasters who no longer have the time to run their site, have gotten bored of their site, want to cash in on their site etc… have an outlet in which to get a nice chunk of cash for their efforts.

In some ways this is the equivalent of a get out of jail free card. The webmaster starts with a grand idea, gets excited, creates the site, the site flops, webmaster sells, recovers cost of development etc…

On the other side of the coin, site buyers are able to save huge amounts of time, market research and promotion, by letting someone else do the hard work, and then paying them for their efforts.

This should be a win/win scenario, and often it is… but there is one issue that seems to be rearing it’s ugly head over and over again: The Webmaster Delusion.

The Webmaster Delusion

The Webmaster Delusion is basically the mindset of webmasters who own websites and are looking to sell. I don’t mean to stereotype, but the vast majority of site owners that we deal with on a yearly basis (a LOT), have the delusion of thinking that their website is the new Myspace or Million Dollar Homepage. However, without fail, these sites are often amateur failures that are worth no more than a few hundred dollars.

Today I would like to pose the question to everyone reading this… WHY? Why do webmasters consistently over-value their websites to crazy proportions?

Midascode.co.uk is an industry leader in site flipping, yet we don’t have an exact answer to this question.

How can a $300 website be seen as being worth $40,000? Yes, you read correctly… $40,000

One obvious answer is that the site owner is the owner, and therefore is bias. But car owners don’t do the same, you don’t see small, knackered old cars being sold at Porsche prices. It would be crazy to do such a thing. Yet in the world of webmasters, it is common practice for a car with no tyres to be valued as a gold plated limo.

a prime example of delusion

Recently we had a great example of this, we knew a site owner who had a site with approx 150 visitors per day, and the site was making almost no money, the design was poor, and didn’t have many links. So we valued the site in the low end of the spectrum, let’s say for the purpose of this example, we would be willing to pay an absolute max of $800.

We discussed the site in detail with the owner, and then we asked him to tell us what sort of price range he was considering… for privacy reasons I won’t give the exact details, but his valuation was over $70,000

His twisted logic was based on a value per visitor of $250, despite the fact that he was making no money from the users.

In reality I could have achieved this same traffic via PPC for less than 25c per visitor, which would have given a value of $700 (much closer to the actual value)

So how on earth can an owner of a $700 website, demand $70,000?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this… if it was just a few people, I would put it down to lack of knowledge, but this represents the vast majority.

Also, it is worth noting that he contacted us.

We all know that the real value of something is whatever anyone is willing to pay, but when you have been in the site buying and selling business as long as Midascode, you develop a strong sense of a site’s value, and in most cases we are correct in our assessments.

So once I again I must pose the question… why do the vast majority of webmasters do this?
I have seen life changing amounts of money being offered for websites, and the owner will refuse and demand x100 more.

Why would someone with an average income refuse such a large amount of money?

I have a few beliefs on why there is such delusion:

What causes the delusion?

1) They have a personal interest – Webmasters often put huge amounts of time and effort into sites, in the vast majority of times, this time and effort is largely wasted, and is of no value in the real world. But the webmaster doesn’t see it that way, as it was THEIR time and THEIR effort.

2) They are bias – Many webmasters are blind to the mistakes they have made with their sites. They are convinced that the $1,000 they spent on directory submissions will add $3,000 to the site’s value, when in reality it has done more harm than good. So getting a logical valuation is always going to be trickier.

3) They lack basic business knowledge – Again, I don’t want to stereotype, but if a site is not making any revenue, then that alone is enough to show that perhaps you are not dealing with the brightest business mind in the industry. I often find the sites that have been complete failures, have the craziest valuations. So perhaps it is just a lack of knowledge that is the cause?

4) A lack of foresight – Here is something we hear very often: “my site makes $50 per month, so I could just keep it for 10 years and make $6,000, so my valuation is $7,000″

So many webmasters presume that their sites are only going to get better with time, despite the fact that many of them have long since given up on the sites. In reality, the sites are going to rot, and revenue will decrease each month. Also, the sites are susceptable to changes in Google rankings, new competitors, hackers, spammers, loss of interest in the industry, a web 2.0 bubble crash.

To presume that a site is only going to improve, shows a fantasy style of thinking. In reality, any site on the planet could potentially be worthless in a years time. It only takes a large lawsuit, a determined hacker, a huge Google change, or a web bubble crash for this to happen. Yet webmasters are happy to predict perfect conditions for the next 10+ years.

Your thoughts

Have you bought or sold websites? Have you experienced any of the above? Can you relate to any of the above?

We would love to hear from you. This article is not a rant, we are genuinely looking for answers to this delusion. We feel a lack of knowledge is the main factor for this delusion, and we are trying to do something about that by providing the largest source of quality site buying and selling information on the net.

We look forward to your thoughts.

Most Expensive Domain Sale of the Week

Domain Names No Comments »

What were the most expensive domain names sold in the past week? What were the big money sellers? and does the mighty .com have some new challengers to the throne?

Well, I can reveal that this weeks most expensive domain sale was for the domain name: OTV.com for the tune of a whopping $110,000

Not bad!

Is .com Still King?

Many people will tell you to avoid anything other than a .com extension, but it may appear that this advice is getting a little dated. Let’s look at the other 4 domains in the top 5 top sellers for the past week:

OTV.com $110,000
Insurance.mobi $42,005
Hotel.pk $35,644
Hawaii.de $31,367
Pussy.mobi $24,158

Amazingly only one of the top 5 domains was a .com, so it may appear that the tides are turning.

Wishful thinking alert: Pussy.com is perhaps from someone who loves cats….

Elsewhere in the domain markets it was of personal interest to me to hear that Spain had the most country based sales in the top 20 biggest country based sales last week. The pick of which was JuegosJuegos.es (Juegos means Games), and this sold for $6,416

Perhaps finally Spain is catching up on the net.

Note: If you have a domain you would like to sell, contact us today and we may publish it free of charge on the site.

Website For Sale – Ebay Most Watched Listings Website For Sale

Midascode Comment: Interesting one this, if for not other reason, the fantastic Domain Name. On the “negative” I can only see Public Service Ads on the Adsense – so I suspect Google is having problems telling what the site is about? Of course it could just be me. The idea is quite cute as well – it could do well if people got to know about the site – but then that could be said of just about every website. GREAT DOMAIN NAME!

Website For Sale – Foxbroker.com

Here at Midascode we get a large number of websites offered to us every day. If we are truthful (and we should be) many of the sites are of very poor quality and often those that are OK, do not meet our criteria for buying (not an industry that we wish to work in etc)

But of course, just because we are not interested, does not mean that other Website Buyers would not be interested.

Consequently we have decided to add to our Websites For Sale section details of some of the sites we are not interested in purchasing ourselves – in the hope that some of the many Website Buyers who visit our site would be interested.

The offering below is a bit of a strange one – if for no other reason that the site is making Nil revenue but the owner is hoping to get around $59,900 CAD. The sums don’t stack up for me, but perhaps I am missing something?
