30 Wasted Domain Names
Domain Names August 14th, 2007I was recently reading Succeed with this.com, and I stumbled across a list of 30 of the most wasted domain names on the net.
They are all highly valuable and have huge potential, yet very little has been done with them.
Here is the entire list:
1) Cool.com
PageRank: Unranked
Alexa: Over 350,000
This domain is simply parked.
2) Hot.com
A single page with nothing on it except a lame colored logo. The sky is the limit for a domain like this.
3) Porn.com
PageRank: Unranked
Alexa: Unranked
This one is parked too but has a cool design. I’m guessing it’s making decent money, but no where near what a domain of this weight can bring in. Any regular developed porn site attached to this domain could make the profits hit the roof.
4) Sexy.com
After being presented with a warning page of enter or exit, the only thing you see next is a parked page.
5) Alien.com / 6) Ufo.com
These two can be put in the same category. With all the talk about aliens and ufo’s, these domains can be instant success.
Instead, Alien.com is a 404 page!!
And Ufo.com just a parked page.
7) Toy.com
PageRank: 0
Alexa: Over 3 million
An amazing 3 letter domain! Yet just another parked page.
8 ) Pal.com
Some sort of weird and unpopular search engine. Another great 3 letter domain put to waste.
9) Queen.com
Parked
10) Oral.com
Parked
11) Crazy.com
Parked. Could easily be used to feature all sorts of crazy videos or stories.
12) Pro.com
Wow! What can I say. A 403 forbidden! Some people would do anything just to have the word pro in front of another word in their domains, like proplayer or propoker…This person has the 3 letter by itself, and doing nothing!
13) Cash.com
PageRank: Unranked
Alexa: Over 2 million
Just parked.
14) Card.com
Parked for some credit cards. Could be used for a gambling site or a developed credit card site.
15) Super.com
Parked
16) Store.com
This thing could be something similar to eBay or Amazon, but it is just parked.
17) Cloth.com / 18) Clothing.com
Each of them could be the central location for anything related to clothing, but just parked.
19) Personal.com
A great domain for a dating site or personal resource information site, but parked.
20) Join.com
Parked
21) Fight.com
PageRank:1
Alexa: Over 1 million
Anything about boxing and UFC and mixed martial arts can be discussed here and it would easily be the #1 reference on the subject.
22) Gamble.com
PageRank: 3
Alexa: Over 8 million
Parked
23) Home.com / 24) House.com
One of them parked, the other one slightly developed. In the mortgage world, these domains can make more profit than anything else.
25) Dance.com
Parked.
26) Pay.com
Parked
27) Host.com
Parked. Can you find a better domain name for a hosting company?
28) Men.com
PageRank:3
Alexa: Over 250,000
Acquired for 1.3 million dollar and seems fully developed. However, a domain like this carries so much power that it is ridiculous it is not more popular.
29) Plan.com
PageRank:0
Alexa: Over 5 million
Parked
30) My.com
A 2 letter domain! Seems like an unsuccessful hosting company. This is the only 2 letter domain in this list, and man this is wasted.

Very interesting and you’ve got to wonder exactly why buy something and not use it…? While I’m not a big fan on believing Alexa (long story lol), a surefire way would be to look up the keyword(s) in wordtracker or overture (if you can get it to work today) to see if the traffic for any of these is really there. Again, thanks for an interesting post, I enjoyed my visit

I am sure you have lots of people checking out
new domains on godaddy right now

Wow! I find it absolutely AMAZING that those domains aren’t being used. Talk about leaving money on the table. The owners of those sites must be leaving millions of dollars on the table!

I am something of a domain collector, so I get frustrated when I find a domain I want is taken and then, when I check to see what’s being done with it, find it not being used. I think some people buy them for an investment with the idea of selling it later on.

I want to thank you for your wonderful articles about buying web sites. I was about to spend my hard earned money on a site that did not do what the owner said it would. He was using smoke and mirrors to make the site seem like it had more sources of income than it really did. Come to find out the only source of income it had was adsense. If I had not read your articles I would have made a big mistake. Thanks again jim redmond

did not realize the domains above are not doing anything with their name… such a shame.

Wow - “waste not, want not,” folks. Those of us with REALLY long domain names are jealous!
August 15th, 2007 at 12:51 am
Wow! I missed out on some great ones when I was looking, eh! pro.com and cash.com are just perfect-I’m looking into this!
Thanks…..

Thanks for the information. How do does one try to purchase these unused domain names? I will look forward to your next post?

Wow! I found a lot of great information and it really put many things into perspective. I really liked the post Improved and Proficient Teams. I just experience the same scenario while on a team and their was a power struggle between two members. This almost caused everything to come crashing down like a house of cards. All the while, everyone was suffering because the productivity level dropped enormously due to the two stubborn and selfish individuals that were battling for control. The end result was a compromise but it did not come with out a huge cost. A cost that will never be recovered. Let that be a lesson!!!

Jeeeez. This is unreal. What a bloody waste!

I’m glad someone is taking the time to point out how money is lost simply by being lazy!
August 17th, 2007 at 4:09 pm
incredible…bet they’re making a bit of cash, but the missed potential is criminal!
August 17th, 2007 at 6:32 pm
I’m guilty as charged…
I’m the owner of lovers-guide.com and I have put it on the back burner for the last year.
Procrastination is the word I’m looking for. Slap around the back of the neck is another.
Some day…One day…I’ll get around to kick starting it into action.
So….a guilty man has confessed

My goodness! I’m amazed that those domain names are not being put into use. I wonder if there is a way to purchase them. There must be oodles of money in contemplation–probably millions! What a loss..like a myriad of moneybags blowing in the wind. Thanks so much!

Dont we all start by thinking of a name for the site and, if its taken, move on to the next without giving it further thought. I have sometimes been amazed at the names that are still available
October 7th, 2007 at 4:55 pm
these are probably all owned by that Chinese guy who scoops up every decent domain and auctions them off.
October 11th, 2007 at 11:26 pm
I’m guessing that alien.com’s “404 - not found” is an intentional gag. Get it? Aliens… not found.
October 15th, 2007 at 6:14 pm
I would say these domains aren’t even good anymore. The days when it was important to register “pencilsharpeners.com” if you were selling pencil sharpers has passed. Nor is there a need for irrelevant adjectives. We have search engines. Name trademarks like “demonoid”, “craigslist”, and “slashdot” have a better ring and more staying power, and they indicate a more mature internet.
No one ever calls a business startup “Cool” for a reason.
October 16th, 2007 at 1:27 am
I agree that these are wasted, but I am sure some of these owners are holding out for someone big to come along and offer them some ridiculous price for the domain. They don’t understand that the best domains are branded domains. But still, cool.com could go a long way for about anything.
October 17th, 2007 at 3:28 pm
Those are very easy to memorize domain names…if they did a good SEO job on those..I’m sure those sites would rank higher…not only in Alexa but also in Google’s Page Rank..^^
October 24th, 2007 at 10:11 pm
Imagine what somebody could do with those domains … and imagine what kind of revenue he would generate with some developed websites… makes me cry
October 25th, 2007 at 10:49 pm
Hot.com now has a Kucinich ad.
November 4th, 2007 at 11:14 pm
Lucky owners of that domain names. Imagine what’s the market value of that names?? Just ask it
November 9th, 2007 at 8:33 am
I look at it as inspiration.
Rather then get jealous over what these people own/have, it inspires me to try and work hard and not miss any new opportunities that pop up in the present and the future.
There is no point in agonizing over spilled milk.

They’re not a waste of money at all just sitting there idle. They’ve obviously been bought for investment purposes. To actually develop them would simply be a waste of time, since in these cases, the value is in the name itself, not in any website that could go with them. If I owned one of these, I’d do exactly the same.

Wow, that is truly amazing to see. If, as Mark suggests, I were only squatting on one of these domains as an investment, I would still put a little more work into the parking. I can only imagine the profits from such type-in traffic.
